Prof. Jong Bin Kim explores and engineers soft matter—including liquid crystals, polymers, and colloids—that exhibit exceptional flexibility and dynamic responsiveness to external stimuli. By bridging the fundamental self-assembly of soft materials with advanced multi-scale fabrication techniques such as photolithography, microfluidics, 3D printing, and precision molding, he designs architected material systems tailored for advanced optical and robotic applications. His research encompasses a broad spectrum of cutting-edge technologies, translating soft matter physics into real-world applications including next-generation sensors, advanced displays, anti-counterfeiting optical materials, biomedical platforms, and environmental-adaptive soft robotics.
The pioneering advanced soft matter platforms developed by Prof. Jong Bin Kim have yielded major breakthroughs featured in premier journals, including six papers in Advanced Materials and one in Science Advances. This body of work has earned major technological accolades, notably being selected for the 2021 KAIST Top 10 Research Achievements and receiving the Samsung Humantech Paper Award (Bronze Prize). Consistently recognized for scientific leadership and innovation, the research continues to garner global visibility through honors such as the CAS Future Leaders Top 100 by the American Chemical Society and competitive NRF postdoctoral fellowship support.
