Abstract

The male shaman in Dongmak DodangKut in Kyonggi Province are called Hwaraeng-i, and they take the leading role in shamanistic music and narratives. This paper in on the literary value of the narratives of Sirumal, Goonwoongkut, and Duitcheon of Dongmak DodangKut which took place in April 2-3, 1984 at DongmakDong, Incheon, Kyonggi Province,Sirumal is a kind of creation myth. Hearing the words of Sirumal, one could get to the Time of the Beginning, in illo tempore, and the Primal Chaos. We could meet the transcendental characters, such as Dangchilsung, Sunmoon-i, Hoomoon-i, and we experience some kind of sublime through them.
We humans are aware that this transcendence is the base of the reality we live by. we can not assure ourselves of the durability of our world without any kind of transcendence. The transcendental beings are expected to set up our presence solid and reliable.
GoonwoongKut and Goonwoong Nojunggi tell us the process of the transcendental being's coming down to our village, and Hwaraeng-i narrates the blessings we expect for the whole year. Therefore Goonwoongkut is filled with our wishes of everyday life. So in the process of Goonwoongkut, fortune-tellings are given to each villagers by shamans.
Two main characters of Duitcheon are (1) persons of crudity and inferiority, (2) victimized souls related to regretful death. These crude and inferior beings are also the other pillar of our everyday life as is the transcendental beings.
Dongmak is a very small village. The villagers live in there all through their life. The contents of the narratives of the shamans in the Dongmak DodangKut enable them to be aware of the invisible powers sustaining our visible life. From the point of oral literature, we can say that it may be the important function of Dongmak DodangKut in the past.
