Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of high school educational activities on public service motivation (PSM) and discuss the change directions of high school education in Korea. This study examines the effects of competency-based educational activities and high school climate on PSM using the three waves of longitudinal data (6th to 8th survey) from the 2013 Korean Education Longitudinal Study and applying a structural equation model (SEM). It finds that student participatory class, comprehension of course content, interactive teaching method, and consideration of students’ opinions in high schools have positive and significant effects on students’ PSM, but poor classroom climate has a negative effect on PSM, while assessment and feedback is not significantly related to PSM. These results show the positive effects of competency-based educational activities and good school climate on high school students’ PSM. By discussing the results of this study and previous studies, suggestions are also made for the direction of high school education to improve PSM
