Abstract

In this paper, we review and analyze the strong interactions in the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and the Drell-Yan (DY) processes.
Based on the effective field theory approach, we develop QCD factorization theorems for both hard scattering processes. As a result, the relevant structure functions are factorized as the hard function and the parton distributions (PDFs), which describe the short and the long-range strong interactions, respectively. We compute the structure functions and the PDFs up to the next-to-leading order (NLO) in $\alpha_s$. Then matching the structure functions to the PDFs, we obtain infrared, finite, hard functions to the NLO. We also considered the renormalization behaviors of the hard functions and the PDFs, and obtained their anomalous dimensions. The result clearly shows that the relevant structure functions are scale invariant.
