N2 - Background Despite continuous research and projects for the improvement of public rental housing, the toilet is the most inconvenient place for the elderly and the physically challengedpeople due to its small size. In order to increase the independence, safety, and usability, it isrequired to develop hygiene products that reflects user requirements from the perspective ofuniversal design. Methods The current status and user characteristics of rental housing in South Korea wereidentified through literature research and a survey for residents of rental housing was conducted. In order to derive problems with the products, a usability test was conducted on the various usergroups including elderly and physically challenged people. In addition, a co-creation workshopwas held to identify design improvement directions with usability test participants, designers, anduniversal design experts. Results Based on the results of the survey, usability test, and co-creation workshop, variousproblems and user requirements for toilet hygiene products including washbasins, toilet bowls, showerheads and shower chairs were identified. Finally, we established design guidelines to suggestdesign considerations and improvement directions for the products of rental housing, and wediscussed implications from a universal design perspective. Conclusions This study suggests the direction for the development of a South Korean standardmodel that improves the usability of rental housing hygiene products.
