공예를 활용한 지속가능한 디자인 기업 사례연구

The purpose of this research is to discover the fact that craftwork is a significant part among the sustainable design products and additionally propose a justifiable reason for the industrial direction of the craftwork industry as a sustainable design by analyzing the relationship between sustainable design and craftwork. In order to carry out this process, this study employed an analytic frame called ‘Factors for Sustainable Design Activities,’ and twelve different design companies as case study subjects were selected and analyzed according to this frame. In addition, based on the statistical figures drawn from the analysis aforementioned, the relationship between sustainable design and craftwork features was investigated by going through numerous steps including group discussions and in-depth analysis of 13 researchers who are all craftwork-related majors. Through case studies, the main perspective of sustainable design was compared with the average value of activity factors, and the importance of it was verified. Furthermore, this study compared the upper group and lower group based on the average value of each company’s activity factors and major issues. The first result of the analysis is: craftwork seeks the small quantity small production system, and since it has its own philosophy of creating high value products through handmade craftsmanship this can act as an important success factor in the economic perspective of sustainable design. Second, it has a significantly deep correlation with sustainable design in terms of its ability to propose materials and techniques which can heighten the environmental value, which is one of the decisive factors that forms sustainable design. Third, it also has a close correlation with craftwork in the way that sustainable design can maximize its social value depending on which materials from the local culture were used to make the product, the technique and know-how put into making the product, and by who makes the product. In conclusion, this study shows that craftwork plays a critical role for sustainable design. It is evident that sustainable design is an industrial field which can be developed into craftwork industry. We can maximize its economic, social, and environmental values by utilizing the core capabilities such as craftwork knowledge, techniques, and activities when sustainable designs are applied.
