Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the state of contact lens wearing, the use of care products, and the effect of noncompliance in the caring count when using hydrogen peroxide on the parameters and pigmentation of circle soft contact lenses (hereafter, circle lenses). Methods: The use of contact lenses and care solution was investigated through a survey of adults, aged 15~40 years. Five pairs of unused domestic commercial circle lenses were repeatedly cared with AOSept Plus® once a week to ensure non-compliant count of care. Changes were confirmed by measuring the lens parameters before and after. Changes in the pigmented area were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Results: All circle lenses that were repeatedly cared by non-compliance using AOSept Plus® showed a decrease in water content, increase in central thickness, and a statistically significant decrease in total diameter and base curve. However, visible light transmittance was not significantly affected. The change rate of most parameters was large for the high-water ionic circle lens, and the largest number of parameters showed changes outside the allowable criteria of the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. As a result of examining the changes in the pigmented area of circle lenses, after non-compliant use of AOSept Plus®, the protrusion of pigmented area, the dislocation of microcapsule, and uneven lens surface and obscure pigmented boundary were differently observed, depending on the pigmentation method, indicating the possibility of dye elution. Conclusions: These results suggested that it is important to follow the manufacturer's recommended caring instructions and avoid excessive caring the circle lenses when temporarily stop wearing circle lenses and keep storing them. A more detailed cleansing method using hydrogen peroxide may be possible if research that considers wearing pattern in real life is further supported.
