Abstract
This article focuses on intolerance and politics of difference in early Chinese philosophy. Intolerance in Mencius and The Han Feizi is analyzed with a special focus on Zhu Xi’s commentaries. This analysis demonstrates that tolerance and intolerance in Confucianism function complementarily to construct Confucian identity among various philosophical traditions. Politics of difference is examined in the context of Xunzi. The ambiguity of tolerance in the Korean context is better understood through Guoyu’s explanation of intolerance and politics of difference in early Chinese philosophy.
