Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the awareness of educational technology of the Korean teacher volunteers in Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). In general, Korean teachers’ capability to utilize technologies for their classes has become more important than before the pandemic hit. For them, using technology is now as important as their Korean or educational knowledge. However, it is not easy for many of teachers, who are familiar with conventional teaching materials, methods, and settings, to improve such IT competence in a short period of time. It may be more difficult for the KOICA teachers to achieve certain level of IT competence, because they largely have relatively short teaching experience, come from different fields, or start teaching later than general Korean teachers. This paper closely examined the KOICA Korean teaching volunteers’ awareness of educational technology. As a result, it turned out that the level of their awareness is lower than the preliminary teacher group. In addition, those who came from other fields than Korean teaching and who are older showed even lower awareness. Now, the teaching environment has changed. No matter how stable the pandemic situation will become, technology utilizing skills will remain essential for teachers, especially who are going overseas. Thus, if possible, technology using skills should be included in KOICA’s teacher training programs.
