Abstract
As convergence technologies have been regarded as key elements for securing global competitiveness, the Korean government has increased funding for research on convergence technologies. Nonetheless, systematic analysis on the impact of the investment has yet to be provided. The purpose of this paper is to identify the patterns in the overall shape of convergence networks of government-funded research in Korea and interpret hidden implications within them. In this paper, a Social Network Analysis (SNA) method was used to analyze the convergence technology of 19 government-funded research institutes (GFRIs) in Korea. Based on convergence network of GFRIs, a quadrant matrix showing convergence characteristics has been proposed and the trends of structural changes have been analyzed. This paper shows that government investment on convergence has made impact on structure of convergence research. It also suggests that both characteristics of the network and dynamic status should be carefully considered when promoting convergence technology.
