Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the economic feasibility of applying thermal breaks to a typical multi-residential building located in Seoul, South Korea. Specifically, by using the TRNSYS dynamic simulation tool, this study compared the building energy demand and annual operation cost of a 20-story apartment building with and without the installation of thermal breaks. The results show that 16.07% of annual heating and cooling operation costs can be saved by installing thermal breaks. However, the discounted payback period for thermal breaks were found to be 19.545 years, due to their high investment costs. Therefore, building engineers will have to constantly make efforts to ensure the technological improvements and dropping costs of building thermal breaks in the future.
