As a research method, this paper first conduct literature research related to ‘small design studio’ from the mid-2000s to the present when the term ‘small studio’ came out. It was confirmed that most of the literature was mainly related to graphic studios, that there were few papers related to small furniture studios, and finally, the words defining small design studios were not clear. Based on the literature research conducted afterwards, various definitions of small design studio were examined, and based on this, “small furniture studio” was defined as a designer who does not belong to a company but carry out independent projects, designs and maufacures together and expands the scope to exhibitions and spaces not limited to furniture. A case study was conducted to examine the small furniture studio. Starting with ‘No name No shop’ in 2005, it was confirmed that a small furniture studio was active in earnest in 2010. We looked at the background of the emergence of small furniture studios. There are four main things, the first is the influence of digital fabrication, the second is the emergence of maker movements and the third is activities in the field of culture and art. And finally, the influence of a small graphic studio. Among them, pay attention to the maker movement and check the connection. As a result, the emergence of small furniture studios not only presents new directions and models in the design world since the 2000s, but also confirms the possibilities of the cultural and artistic field. As the shape of the design studio changed, the activities were diversified. This paper identified the flow based on literature research, and subsequent studies further deal with in-depth interviews of small furniture studios and cultural and artistic field officials.
