Abstract

This study analyzed the economic and environmental performance of structural thermal breaks, one of the passive design elements that has been overlooked in South Korean residential sector, in order to encourage its mandatory application in the field. Specifically, this paper used the TRNSYS simulation tool to compare and analyze the reduction effects of annual heating and cooling 1) energy demand, 2) operation costs, and 3) CO₂ emissions according to the application of structural thermal breaks in a typical 20-story multi-residential apartment located in Seoul, South Korea. From an economic perspective, the results show that the initial cost of structural thermal breaks should be reduced by 69.5% in order to meet a 10-year discounted payback period (DPP). Meanwhile, the CO₂ emissions that can be reduced by using this insulation material appeared to be approximately 21.58%, which is considered to be significant in terms of the environmental perspective. Finally, this study will serve as a practical guideline to explore the future vision of structural thermal breaks.
