Abstract
Self-abuse is a dilemma. Apparently, it is against self-respect. However, without serial behavior, including self-abuse, achievement does not seem to be possible. This article aims to distinguish self-control from self-abuse in Xunzi, who is well known for his view on the evilness of human nature. Suppose that human nature is evil; self-denial and self-abuse will be easily justified. Rousseau’s concept of amour propre and Axel Honneth’s idea of recognition and sympathy before independent and self-sufficient individuality are applied to explain the process of self-control in Xunzi. Recognition and sympathy enable a human being to respect others and learn from them. Mutual respect controls self-abuse and nurtures self-esteem.
