Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest a teaching method to help students with modeling work considering their functions and uses by utilizing virtual reality in 3D formative education. 3D formative modeling, along with 2D formative modeling, is a basic required course for domestic and foreign art colleges, and aims to understand and develop form through various materials and production techniques. 3D formative modeling is a class that is the basic for making, and it becomes the basis for product, furniture, interior, and architecture major fields. Various computer tools have been used effectively because imagining and creating various modeling products helps to achieve the goal of the 3D modeling class. In this study, virtual reality is used for 3D modeling education to plan a class that helps students' modeling work. The research followed qualitative research methods such as literature review, experiments and observations based on design ethnography, interviews, and group discussions. A workshop was held to identify ways of using virtual reality in the 3D modeling curriculum. The workshop was divided into a virtual reality experimental group and a control group, and a project was carried out to explore the functionality of form. The process and outcomes of the formative practice were analysed using evaluation indicators of aesthetics, practicality and creativity. The virtual reality team’s sculptures showed diverse and original design results with a clear concept, and it was concluded that 3D modeling practice using virtual reality tools would help the project to explore the functionality of form. Based on the results of the workshop, the 15th week 3D modeling curriculum was developed, and the content and evaluation for each week were presented in detail so that it could be applied in the classroom. The curriculum developed in this study is expected to understand the characteristics of virtual reality, discuss various design education directions that can be applied to 3D modeling education, and serve as a basis for design education.
