Abstract
The purpose of the Christian book is generally to help effectively convey religious messages. The books should be designed to convey its implications in book cover design. However, the existing books have many deficiencies in terms of book design compared to ordinary books. Because there are many factors that are constrained in book design work, it is necessary to use visual composition elements creatively to maximize the function of book design. In this paper, the factors and practical problems that are constrained in the book design work of the book except for the Christian doctrines were identified and the points of improvement were proposed.
The scope of the study was based on Recover Book Design, books published between 2000 and 2019, in Sijosa((Korean Publishing House)) the first comprehensive publication of the 110-year-old Christian publisher. For analysis, four visual composition elements of layout, typography, color, and image were extracted based on evaluation criteria, and five volumes of visual investigation and publication were analyzed by dividing them into before and after recurve elements based on para-text and visual composition elements. Based on the analysis data, a book design expert’s opinion was collected on what problems the designer might have in using visual composition elements.
The analysis results showed that when working on book cover design, the importance of the four visual elements was found to be the largest layout, followed by image, color, and typography. The factors constraining the book designer to work during the work were the influence of the client and the decision maker, the company’s leaders and officials. As a result of this improvement, the importance of planning and change in the consciousness of decision makers was emphasized, indicating the need to actively reflect in the future book design of Christian books.
