Abstract
The Cultural archetypes are an academic concept that have taken on a policy orientation. They have three common elements: “first,” “information,” and “utilization.” As cultural archetypes are a universal representation of our national identity and a barometer of our collective unconsciousness, they can contribute to the future development of our cultural content and industry. It is thus meaningful to identify the cultural archetypes our community has continuously enjoyed and to consider the aspects of its creative succession in the contemporary cultural content. This is also the basis for the development of various media. Cultural archetypes serve as bridges connecting the past and present, and constitute a valuable indicator of our unique cultural assets and their aspects that can be used at present.
In this paper, I analyzed the motif of “dream” in two different dramas: the Korean play A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the TV drama Ssangapocha. This analysis aims to identify aspects of the content in different media, such as stage and TV, that utilize the same cultural archetypes. Both works are very “Korean” in terms of content, including the cultural archetype of the “dream,” and both have characteristics of strengthening Korean characteristics in their adaptation of the original work. Korean theater’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is special in that it combines Shakespeare’s original work with our unique style of yard play. Ssangapocha is an example of the aspects being shaped across webtoons and TV dramas. The drama is also important as an example of the successful recreation of the fantastic events and spaces of “dreams” implemented in webtoons through another media, TV.
