Abstract

The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence rates of previous injury history and chronic overuse injury(COP) among high school male Olympic-style taekwondo athletes. A cross sectional survey was designed and used. A total of 202 athletes participated in our study(average age of 16.9 years, SD=1.0). To analyze the difference between potential risk factors and COP, the independent t-test and χ2-test were performed. In results, a total of 129 (63.9%) athletes reported that they have previous injury history. Overall, the prevalence rate of COP was 48.0%(95% CI: 42.5-53.6). The lower body region (193 cases, 70.7%), the ankle joint (39 cases, 14.3%), was the highest injured body part. χ2-test showed there was a significant difference between past injury history and COP(p<.05). However, we did not find significant differences among other factors such as competition experiences, training frequency per week, and others. In conclusions, overall prevalence rates of COP and previous injury history were high among male high school Olympic-style taekwondo athletes.
