Abstract
Amid the expansion and increasing attention towards the platform labor market, this study seeks to clarify the process and labor representation as outcomes of the platformization of labor, which had been relatively lacking in gig and platform labor studies, within the historical context through a case study of ride-sharing driver in Korea. The ride-sharing driver labor market has evolved from traditional agency to platform labor through a wide range of alliances. The results of the case analysis show that the evolution of the ride-sharing driver market into a platform provided impetus for the consolidation of ride-sharing driver through the standardization of labor conditions and management. Additionally, the platform labor union, while having weak bargaining power at the workplace, was able to utilize institutional power and social resources effectively to negotiate collective agreements. This study examines how, in platform labor that operates under individual commission contracts rather than employment contracts, the paradoxical situation of labor unions organizing and signing collective agreements through collective bargaining is possible from a perspective of power resources.
