Abstract
The role of Korean chaebols has been important for the economic growth of South Korea, but there exist disputes regarding the impact of chaebols on Korean economy. Recently, internal transactions between chaebol affiliates have attracted a fair amount of attention. In this paper, social network analysis (SNA) methods have been applied to analyze the static and dynamic aspects of internal transaction networks of the top five Korean chaebols. The results showed the internal transactions of the top five Korean chaebol have been strengthened during 2009 and 2015. In particular, outbound centralization increased for the chaebols, which means centralization became stronger from the seller’s standpoint. Also, the benefit of internal transaction has been selectively given to specific areas such as System Integration (SI), MRO, and marketing. This paper shows that SNA can be used in the empirical study of the internal transactions of Korean conglomerates.
