Abstract
The aim of this paper is conducting research on the possibility of a materialist art theory after realism. Realism was considered to have lost its influence after the collapse of socialism, but it was not. First, realism is still alive on the sentimental level. Second, a linguistic illusion that makes people believe that realism is a kind of art responding to the problems posed by reality, is sustaining realism. Every serious art, including so called ‘art for art’s sake’, responds to the problems posed by reality. What distinguishes realism from the others is its representational style. However, even in representational art, what makes a work artistic is not the accuracy of representation but the atmosphere surrounding the object. Artists condense affects by surrounding the object with ambiguous atmosphere composed of various senses. The affects belong to the work, whereas emotions belong to viewer’s mind. As a condensation of affects, art works make people transcend the given senses and thoughts by offering transcendental experiences, thereby opening the door to ‘another life’. Unlike the idealist concept of art that is close to ‘the sensuous shining (Scheinen) of the Idea’, this concept of art provides clues to the materialist concept of art.
