Abstract
Background According to the National Health Insurance Corporation, the prevalence ratios of high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and etc. are continually increasing due to the increase of the aging population and Koreans’attraction to a westernized lifestyle. The result has been an increase of medical expenses as the total amount of doctor bills among annual health insurance fees increases. By this observation, this study mainly considers the need for the main targets to engage in proper behaviors and be provided with clear information so that they may take care of themselves and improve their health on their own.
Methods This thesis, based on the key findings from the research titled "Finding the problems and improvement of healthcare services leading to the prevention, management, and implementation of metabolic syndrome and chronic diseases," aims to identify the fundamentals of improving health brochure design. In addition, this paper draws an alternative based on the problems of the brochures that were analyzed and presents an improved brochure design in terms of the structure, contents, graphs, and style based on the results. To examine the brochure this thesis developed, we conducted a survey and in-depth interviews with eight patients who have metabolic syndrome factors and chronic diseases to perfect the final version of the health brochure through modification and supplementation based on the results.
Results Implication of the Analysis of the Results of the Survey The analysis reveals that the overall graphic and design effects are excellent and the respondents living with metabolic syndrome responded high to the positive answers on the same degree of information. Main Improvements after Validating the Prototypes This new design strengthens the contents by allowing a patient to know his/her disease status by allowing self-comparison with a patient who has the same disease, and it ensures visibility by magnifying drawings and the font size based on the age of the patient.
Conclusions The aim of this thesis is to improve the design of brochures in order to convey information effectively such as the warning signs of disease, their progress, etc., against the factors of metabolic syndrome, which is an early stage of diseases, as a way to prevent diseases and promote people’s maintenance of better health after the conducting of a national health screening. This health brochure aims not only to provide a better design but also to help people sustain a healthy life while cutting down the social costs of medical expenses. For these purposes this design will be the foundation of mobile health guidance and play a crucial role linking community businesses related to exercise, education, food, and etc.
