Abstract
This study investigated the effect of instagram use by college men and women on body surveillance and body shame. A total of 223 Korean college men and women using instagram were extracted from surveys and from which 218 respondents were used. A structured questionnaire composed of demographic variables used in instagram(uploading, reading, reacting, photo editing) and body shame and body surveillance was used in this study. By using SPSS 25, this study conducted frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and regression analysis. The results were as follows: First, instagram use increases the body surveillance of college men and women. Specifically, photo editing and writing behaviour in instagram use affects body surveillance. Second, instagram use increases the body shame among college men and women. Photo editing and reading behaviour in instagram use affects on the body shame. Through the results of this study, it was able to investigate the influencing factors of body surveillance and shame by specifying them for each particular type of instagram use. Furthermore, the results of this study would be able to be used as the basis for appropriate intervention in media literacy education or counseling situations.
