Abstract
This study aims to identify urban integration types and characteristics of university facilities in France and the following results were obtained: First, today's university facilities are based on urban integration plan that universities are included in cities beyond the previous concept that universities were separated from cities. Second, the urban integration types of the university facilities in France are classified into three types:linear dispersive integration, multi-nuclear dispersive integration and concentrated dispersive integration. For the linear dispersive integration, facilities are dispersed within 0.5km~1km away from the station influence area. For the multi-nuclear dispersive integration, facilities are lined up within 1km~1.5km centering on the secondary center as a base of industrial clusters. For the concentrated dispersive integration, facilities are integrated with residential, business, commercial and cultural facilities within 0.5km in diameter from university libraries. Third, urban integration of university facilities contributes to vitalization of urban space as young students appear in cafes, shops, restaurants and cultural facilities and reinforcement of urban image. Fourth, the university facilities in France are mixed with public and cultural areas such as libraries, cafeterias, galleries and self-governing bodies in lower floors. Thus, urban integration of university facilities allows universities to have important roles in communities as leaders of social, cultural and economic activation. As well, urban expansion of education areas support universities to have close links with cities.
