Abstract
Background: CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), which began for the purpose of crime prevention, is breaking from top-down development led by institutions and is moving on to be developed into resident-led forms in which residents participate from planning stages to development and maintenance stages. Such resident-led CPTEDs gain characteristics as urban identities so developments must be made adding identity design processes to CPTED processes. Methods: To establish CPTED development processes that have identity design characteristics, case analysis of CPTEDs in Korea was first conducted. Second, identity design processes and CPTED processes were analyzed and CPTED processes that have identity design characteristics were developed. Third, CPTED processes that have identity design characteristics were applied and a CPTED for DongJoong Town was developed. Result: As CPTEDs are often created focusing on small scale communities, they relatively have more active participation from residents. In other words, residents usually want visual environment improvements, town identity, and emotional images in addition to crime prevention, so CPTEDs open up as a part of the local identity. Based on such results, a CPTED development process that has identity design characteristics was established and applied to the CPTED development of DongJoong Town. Conclusion: It is anticipated that the CPTED development process with identity design characteristics as developed in this research will become a useful process in CPTED development that will continuously be introduced into Korea in the future.
