Abstract

This study started with a question about the production of the official history on the Independence Hall of Korea and the way state power works. In particular, I attempted to scrutinize the way state power works by revealing the relationship of “fragmentary knowledges” excluded from official history and the nets of historical facts that were not written in the vast historical records of official history. Specifically, noting that the fire at the Independence Hall, a political event that caused the regime’s crisis in the 1980s, was not described in the vast history of the Independence Hall, I tried to reconstruct its history through a genealogical approach to the “privately-led” discourse. The “privately-led” discourse was born in the flow of economic stabilization policies dating back to the late 1960s, and was embodying a dynamic power relationship between the government and large corporations. The construction of the Independence Hall was defined and promoted through this ‘privately-led’ discourse. As such, the “privately-led” discourse more sharply reveals the power relations in the process of establishing the Independence Hall, and its peak was the fire incident. Therefore, I suggest the fire incident at the Independence Hall open up the horizon of history that does not converge in commemorative rituals of power, by paving gaps in historical silence and oblivion.
