Background As interest in archive increases, research on archiving is needed in design. However, since there are limitations in applying the concept of record management to design archive methodology, the concept research should be conducted. Although this study originates from archives, the study focuses on the open concept of 'archiving' because archives are recognized as hardware, such as archives and museums. Methods In order to trace the current meaning of design archiving, this research generalized the type of archive with an inductive approach, but proceeded to understand the motives and perceptions of social actors and to organize the concepts. I set up two axes of current status and awareness research, and I analyzed the recent interviews of experts related to archives, archive issues, and phenomenon on archives. Results In general, most activities in design archiving are based on the concept of archival management, which has been widely used. It has been confirmed that contemporary design archiving needs to be defined unlike a typical archival concept. Based on the analysis of the current situation and perception, the problem and the contemporary characteristics are derived, and the concept of design archiving is presented. Conclusions I have found implications in the recognition of design archiving and I have derived the concepts of design research, public record, and design archiving as cultural memory reflecting characteristics of design archiving.
