Abstract

Background Despite the attention from the government and businesses toward the domestic upcycling industry, its growth is slower compared to that in other advanced countries. This study analyzes the factors affecting the domestic upcycling industry, and presents ways to stimulate it from the perspective of design. Methods First, we can understand the concept of upcycling by defining it. To investigate the status of this industry, we collected literature, data, and reports from related institutions. Second, the domestic upcycling industry is underdeveloped compared to the overseas upcycling industry; thus, various foundations need to be established. To concretely identify the industry’s status , we comprehensively collected data from websites and media articles regarding the activities of domestic upcycling firms, markets, and institutions. Third, after integrating these data, we analyzed the types of firms, the ecosystem in the industry to identify their characteristics and derive implications for five points. Result Finally, based on these implications, in order to revitalize the domestic upcycling industry, we present four different solutions: (1) research and development of upcycling design methodology and tools, (2) diverse channels to secure stable sources of materials, (3) improving online markets, and (4) developing sustainable educational programs. Conclusion With this research, we hope to: help overcome the limitations in existing production methods of the domestic upcycling industry, find ways to secure stable sources of materials and use them efficiently, foster direct communication between firms and consumers while encouraging the latter to participate in markets, promote an eco-friendly culture, and expand the size of the consumer market.
