Abstract

This study began in finding a way to collect empirical data in order to study the Korean design and as an alternative to complement this, the possibility of oral study was explored.
In this study, the design oral study is the subject of the research but as it is a situation that the oral study in the design sector is insufficient, the scope of study was set to select the cases, which are considered meaningful when proposing the direction of the oral study in the design sector, among oral study cases in the humanities and arts sector where there was considerable accumulated achievements of the oral study and review their characteristics and suggest a direction by utilizing the implication found from that for the method of the oral study in the design sector.
Therefore, this study proposed three directions of oral design study as follows.
First, the oral study has to be run by reviewing not only the senior designer but also the people inside and outside of the organization related to the design.
Second, the oral study on the subjects which are difficult to collect data with literature such as the study on technicians in the manufacturing industry that is closely related the design world is required.
Third, the subject oral study where more extended data for design can be gathered in a social and cultural context by having multilayered testimonies of interviewee.
And the method for the systematic collection and preservation and management of data remains as a future research to utilize the collected data for the oral design study.
It is believed that this study is meaningful in terms of the fact that it seeks various directions of the oral study in the Korean design research. It is expected that the oral study expands in the future design sector and then its results will be utilized as a professional in-depth research data.
