Abstract
In the design decision-making process, a final design is selected through a process such as a team meeting or a competitive exhibition using a rendering image or a mock-up. The rendering image is most frequently used because it can be produced at a low cost in a short time based on 3D modeling data and can obtain an image similar to a real object. Recently, the development of 3D printers has led to an increase in the number of cases in which designs are determined by looking at the results of rendering and 3D printing. 3D printing in the decision-making process can be expected to increase the efficiency and specificity of design decisions. However, there is a lack of discussion as to what role 3D printing results will play in the design decision-making process and how effective it will be. In this study, we tried to get the role of rendering and 3D printing in design decision-making process. We selected actual product development process of ' A handheld personal digital assistant' as a case study and compared the effects of rendering and 3D printing on decision making. As a result , it was found that the functional and usability aspect of the product is considered more important when the design decision process is carried out with the rendering and the 3D printing in comparison with the design decision by rendering alone. In addition, we have elaborated on the design evaluation factors that designers and engineers focus on design decision-making process.
