Abstract

This article aimed to examine the historical thoughts and practices of extending ‘museological desire’ through ‘living museum’, a historical discourse of museum studies and a specific form of museum. And then It tried to make a critical discussion about the various problems of museuological desire focusing on the interpretation issues of living museum. Living museum as an alternative museum movement allowed museum’s extending its own fields, trying to encompass a variety of histories or objects never having been belonged to museums before. By doing this, it vitalized different kind of interpretations about people’s past, tradition, and history. In the meanwhile, living museum has been successively criticized that the interpretations of living museum were not ‘living’ ones. This kind of criticism was fundamentally questioning whether living museum has been a real ‘living’ museum or not. Therefore, for the purpose of solve this problem of living museum, this article proposed that we need to revitalize the aspect of ‘negative heritage’ included in living museum, and make a critical tension against some dangers caused by the museological desire.
