Abstract

Purpose: In the present study, the changes of accommodative function and vision satisfaction in their twenties induced during the adaptation to center near (CNMF) and center distance multifocal soft contact lenses (CDMF) wear were compared. Methods: The accommodative function and vision satisfaction level were evaluated after adapting to 2 kinds of multifocal soft contact lenses (multifocal lenses) with different center designs for 15 minutes in 20 young adults (8 males and 12 females) in their 20s (mean age 22.62±2.31 years), and further comparisons with those in wearing single vision contact lenses were conducted. Results: Accommodative lead was shown in both CNMF and CDMF wearings so that the accommodative lag was significantly reduced compared with single vision. With multifocal lenses wear, shorter near point of accommodation and increased positive relative accommodation were also shown compared to single vision contact lens wear, and their change was greater in the CNMF wearing. Negative relative accommodation and accommodative facility were largely decreased with multifocal lenses compared to single vision contact lens wear, and their decrease was greater in CNMF wearing. Exophoria was shown to have a larger tendency with multifocal lenses wear compared with single vision contact lens wear; however, there was no significant difference between the two multifocal lenses. Vision satisfaction at far and near distances was better in case of CDMF wearing, and the vision satisfaction at far distance was statistically significant. Conclusions: From the results, it was revealed that both CNMF and CDMF wears could suppress myopic progression, and the difference in visual function and visual satisfaction level might be induced by the center design even in a short period of adaptation to multifocal lenses.
