Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose a lighting design that helps people experience moderate stimuli and recover their mind and body. People are not getting adequate rest due to an excess of unnecessary information and noise. Due to this phenomenon, the act of spacing out has recently been attracting attention in the field of product design as well as exhibition design and video design. As the positive effects of spacing out were revealed, it became necessary to consider it more attentively as a design resource. The factors contributing to spacing out were analyzed and utilized in the design process. First, the concept and characteristics of spacing out were examined through literature research and case collection in order to determine the direction of lighting design using spacing out elements. Second, cases in which the characteristics of spacing out discussed above were applied to the design were collected. The factors that cause spacing out in each case were identified, categorized by type, and analyzed to derive the shaping elements. Third, a formative experiment was conducted based on the formative elements derived. The production of lighting including molding elements that cause spacing out was carried out step by step. It was intended to provide non-excessive stimulation and to help relax by elements reminiscent of nature and inducing spacing out through lighting. The fundamental manufacturing process consisted of manufacturing internal molds through MDF processing, plastic molding using vacuum molding, stainless steel rod processing for internal structure, LED lighting installation, and assembly. It is intended to be used in places where users spend a long time, such as the bedside or office space, and to look at a shape similar to the waves of water. It resembles a wave of illumination and provides a time reminiscent of nature that the user has experienced before. This study is meaningful in that it attempted to analyze and apply the concept of spacing out from a formative perspective to use it as a design language, and future studies expect to apply it to various designs through the expansion of utilization methods and objects.
