Abstract

This study Analyses the problem of hand-making in the information technology and production environment being included in the economic organ of the new manufacturing industry under the slogan “Maker Movement”. Originally based on a demand for citizenship and a practice of grassroots activism, DIY(Do It Yourself) has been understood in the tradition of critical making. DIY has also promoted the techno-democratic imagine of expanding technocommons, which aims to transform physical and social relationships through open-source computing based P2P cooperation technology. But the recently emerged maker movement is captured amid a trend in capitalist subsumption, which has reached its limit seeks to push through technological innovation and re-organization of labour division in the manufacturing sector. In the industrial innovation discourse of global maker movement, the high-tech craftsmanship is being transformed into a startup discourse or a driving force for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which shits it to a distributed arrangement of capitalist labour. This article identifies the maker movement as a sign of change in the mode of production of capital through the framework of Marxist Political economy critique, and analyses specific cases of Makerspace. Shenzhen Makerspaces in China, which has emerged as the mecca of the world’s maker movement, is a good example of Shifting the existing labour-intensive consumer electronics industry into a manufacture production. Through this, this article aims to criticize the ways in which technology principles such as the Internet of Things, Open-source software and hardware are transferred to the ‘Becoming Manufacture Labour Platform’ by the power of capital.
