Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to a chair design that reflects the past and the present through a reinterpretation method that changes the materials and fabricating process of conventional Mongolian chairs. Hence, in this paper, the concept, structure, form, utilization, and functional characteristics of Mongolian traditional chairs were explored and organized through literature and web searches, and reinterpretation methods were investigated and classified through various illustrations of works that reinterpret the old furniture.
In addition, among the reinterpretation methods, work cases were classified and analyzed based on the materials and manufacturing methods to study the further materials and techniques that should be used to reinterpret the chair. There are five ways to reinterpret furniture.
In this study, three designs were proposed using modernization of materials and processing methods (3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting machining).
In this paper, among the five ways, three designs were proposed using the reinterpretation method according to the material and manufacturing method changes.
The purpose of the study is to design a chair by suggesting a chair reinterpretation method among Mongolian traditional furniture. It is expected that the reinterpretation method proposed in this study will be useful in reinterpreting other traditional furniture in the future.
