Abstract

Mozi is the philosopher arguing for anti-war in Early East Asian Philosophy. Mozi points out selfishness as the reason for individual conflicts, collective disputes, and war between states. Jianai or universal love is his solution to stop conflicts, disputes, and war. His valuing oneness is one of the major ways to practice universal love. According to his idea of valuing oneness, individuals having all different opinions should be hierarchically organized from the king of the state to an ordinary person in a village and their opinions should be unified into oneness. In this hierarchically organized political communication system, the king will be able to understand people’s petitions and individuals will not need to dispute against others. Mozi’s idea of valuing oneness is incompatible with individual freedom of thought but compatible with equality in some way. Individuals are equal on the level of basic instinct. Profits should be shared and human labor should not be abused. Productivity is crucial to satisfy individual needs. Conflicts, disputes, and war lower productivity dramatically. To prevent individuals and states from conflicts, disputes, and war, the process of political communication is important and individual difference in political opinion should be sacrificed. From the perspective of dispute resolution, equality driven from Mozi’s thought means equality for basic needs on the elementary level rather than equality for comprehensive human rights.
