Abstract
The present study made an attempt to evaluate suitability of the standard physical surface roughness parameters in representing roughness perceived for artificially fabricated random surfaces. These random surfaces imitated complex natural surfaces, consisting of peaks and valleys whose heights and widths are randomly given. The results showed that the amplitude parameters (Ra, Ry, Rz) rather than the spacing parameters are correlated better for the random surfaces, among which Ry is best. On the other hand, it was found that the spacing parameters (Sm, S) are correlated better for the simples surfaces which consist of regularly spaced peaks and valleys.
