Abstract
This study conducts an empirical analysis on how the formation of dual unionism affects such characteristics of wage bargaining as structure, duration, labor dispute and outcome. From theoretical reasoning about the ramifications of inter-union competition between multiple unions, I draw hypotheses as follows: The existence of dual unionism will lower the proportion of multi-employer bargaining, will lengthen bargaining, and increase labor disputes. Besides, this study sets a competing hypothesis regarding how dual unionism affects wage bargaining outcome in terms of wage growth rate. This study employs panel data analyses as its main statistical model, and supplementarily cross-sectional analyses year by year.
Some results of this study indicate that dual unionism has statistically significant negative effects on multi-employer bargaining, and statistically positive effects on labor disputes. On the other hand, it is not supported that dual unionism affect significantly duration or outcomes of wage bargaining. Finally the study results are summarized and their implications are drawn.
