Abstract

This study empirically analyzes which factors influence the formation of dual unionism, utilizing the 3rd~4th waves of Workplace Panel Survey Data. The hypotheses and the empirical models are drawn from the concepts of representation gaps, competition between hard and soft liners, and existing union’s capabilities. The results of this study support some of the theoretical hypotheses. The ratio of contingent workers who join a permanent workers’ labor union and unionization rate have significantly negative effects on the formation of dual unionism, and in parts of the specifications union president’s number of terms also have significantly negative effects on the formation of dual unionism. The results of exploring the effects of competition between hard and soft liners generally indicate that the existence of hard-liner unionism is positively associated with the formation of dual unionism. That is, strike occurrence, supra-enterprise unionism, supra-enterprise wage bargaining, and union democracy have significantly positive effects on the formation of dual unionism. And also KFTU-affiliated and KCTU-affiliated unions generally affect the formation of dual unionism positively. The results are summarized, and their practical implications are discussed.
