Abstract
The purpose of this review article is to provide a systematic overview of the welfare state regime literatures since 1990s so that it can contribute to further scholastic discussion and policy-making, particularly in Korean context. First, this paper outlines Esping-Andersen's typology which ignited 'welfare state modelling business' in a new context, and it presents the criticisms Esping-Andersen received and his reponses to them. Second, the paper gives an overview of alternative welfare state typologies and summarizes theoretical and methodological developments achieved by these different approaches. Finally, the paper reviews the debates on the nature of the Korean welfare state from the perspective of welfare regime typology, and examines the implications of the typology approach and its theoretical and practical benefits in Korean context.
