Abstract

This study aims to assess the spread of high-efficiency and zero-energy houses constructed in accordance with national goals and policies, by applying complex insulation walls to a house in Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Complex insulation walls were studied according to the required performance standards of high- efficiency houses and were compared to passive houses performance standards. The inside and outside temperatures as well as the humidity of a real-size house model constructed applying complex insulation walls were measured during spring and summer. The house was modeled with Design Builder and thermal factors were analyzed by EnergyPlus simulation program. Simulation results and measured data were in good agreement which supported the acceptable accuracy of the simulation. Three other widely used wall types, namely, internal insulation, intermediate insulation, and external insulation were compared to the complex insulation wall using EnergyPlus simulation. The overall wall heat transfer coefficient, wall condensation required by passive house performance criteria, and thermal comfort were calculated and compared for each wall type. Complex insulation walls showed best performance for all factors considered. Unlike other wall types, complex insulation walls were free of condensation, which is known to affect health, indoor air quality, and wall material deterioration.
