Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating roles of grit and self-esteem in the relationship between positive parenting attitudes and career adaptability among high school students. The current study adopted the 4th wave data from Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018(KCYPS 2018). The sample consisted of nationally representative 623 high school students. Using Process Macro 4.3 program, this study analyzed the mediating effects of grit and self-esteem. Results showed that both grit and self-esteem mediated the relationship between each of positive parenting attitudes including parental emotional warmth, supporting for autonomy, and providing structure, and high school students’career adaptability. To be specific, all the three types of positive parenting attitudes predicted career adaptability either through grit or through self-esteem. Dual mediation effect, where parenting attitudes were positively associated with grit, and sequentially with self-esteem, eventually leading to increased career adaptability, was also found. Theoretical and practical implications regarding the present results, study limitations, and directions for future research were discussed.
