Abstract
This study highlights psychometric characteristics of risk perception and media influence on risk communication through an analytic lens of social constructionism by applying a facilitated modeling technique to a group of college students in Korea. Twenty five students participates in group discussions to generate 33 risk items, to evaluate their relative risk levels and to summarize psychometric characteristics of risk in terms of the level of knowledge and dreadfulness. This study also analyzes the influence of mass media in the online environment on risk perception by reviewing news coverage on those risk items generated. The results reconfirm significant differences between the revel of statistical risk and that of perceived risk. Psychometric analyses show that the levels of knowledge and dreadfulness have significant correlations with risk perception. A familiar or a dreadful risk tends to have a high level of risk. Correlation analyses of media coverage and the risk level also confirm strong positive relations.
