Abstract
This article examines relative deprivation from different philosophical perspectives. Rousseau provides a significant conceptual framework for any discussion of relative deprivation at the level of human nature. This article applies Rousseau’s division of self-love, that is to say, ‘amour-de-soi’ and ‘amour propre’ to Xunzi and reexamines the evil nature of ‘amour propre’, from which socio-psychological problems of relative deprivation arise. In Xunzi ‘s context, ‘amour propre’ is necessary for ‘amour-de-soi’ to be realized in any social context. Moreover, it calls on an individual admire Confucian role models and functions as a catalyst for constant self-cultivation. Jealousy is the main reason driving amour propre to relative deprivation, which results in negative relationships with other people. In Xunzi ‘s framework, righteousness controls jealousy and gives room to ‘amour propre’ encouraging self-cultivation through a comparison of relative betters. Li or propriety is a system of social progress driven from individuals’ constant self-cultivation catalyzed by ‘amour propre’.
