Abstract

Background: With the number of students declining across the country, the government has implemented a policy of allocating teachers to the number of students rather than the number of classes. As a result, small schools in rural areas are facing a shortage of teachers and relying on adjunct teachers to run their schools. However, under these circumstances, adjunct teachers face many challenges in terms of their work and relationships with students, colleagues, and schools. This study aims to propose a service idea and functions that can help adjunct teachers manage their workload and facilitate communication.
Methods: The study was conducted using the service design methodology, the Double Diamond process, which consists of four phases: Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. In the Discover phase, we used desk research, surveys, and in-depth interviews with stakeholders to identify problems and gather input. In the Define phase, we analysed and informed the data collected through affinity diagrams. In the evolution phase, we used personas to specify the needs of users and structured the service through design. In the delivery phase, we presented screen-by-screen interaction prototypes to effectively communicate the service features.
Results: As a result of our research, we found that adjunct teachers were facing difficulties in their relationships with students, especially in terms of smooth communication and counseling due to moving from school to school. In addition, when handling school work, they were uncomfortable communicating with schools and colleagues, which made it difficult to get things done quickly, and they were confused by different administrative systems and school calendars between schools. Based on these results, we designed a service that includes features such as academic calendar management, material bulletin board, counseling reservation system, and adjunct teacher community to manage the work of adjunct teachers and facilitate communication.
Conclusion: As adjunct teachers travel to various schools, they are faced with a huge workload and a lack of communication with students and colleagues. Therefore, this study proposes service ideas to alleviate the burden of adjunct teachers' work in order to solve these problems. The results of this study can be used as a basis for improving the quality of public education in rural areas and supporting the work of adjunct teachers.
