Abstract

This study evaluated the main motive power of the intricately intertwined political and economic situation as ‘internationalization’, ‘economic boom’ and ‘democratization’ centered with the Seoul Olympics (from the 1980s to the mid 1990s) and examined how this main power influenced the qualitative growth and quantitative expansion of modern prints in Korea in this period. And this study intended to show that this major power influenced on the formation of new formativeness.
Internationalization has partly contributed to the activation of the workshop as the expansion of human and material international exchange has led to a surge in study abroad and liberalization of the import of art materials. And, it is judged that the demand for prints has increased and interest to new installation of prints major in colleges, but it was influenced by the return of many students who learned prints in foreign countries. The boom of the economy expanded the middle class and made life more affordable, giving more attention to culture and art, and increased demand for prints. Factors that required a large amount of work to decorate many new buildings created by urban development also contributed to the increase in demand for prints. Also, printmaking has become an effective means of struggle for democratization. The possibility of massive distribution of prints, intense images, and easy making became a political aspect of general public prints because it was useful for political messages. In addition, the general public prints have an aesthetic meaning of restoration of formativeness. The increase of technological and material foundation of the printmaking and the struggle for democratization due to this internationalization and economic boom influenced the formativeness directly or indirectly, and it was judged that there was an expansion of ‘internationalized sensitivity’ and the flow of ‘intense shape recovery’.
