Abstract

This study is about the research on the origin of graphic arts as the means of visual communications. This research is focusing on the ideological abstract signs with lines among the graphic images of the Paleolithic Age. These graphic images are the first visual signs of the human kind which were the abstract symbols carrying supernatural energies or the synecdoche related to special mythologies. The graphic signs carried strong shamanistic characters were produced not for the individual taste or the aesthetic values but for the survival and public benefits for the entire society. Now we are living in new media era filled with visual images. The space of visual communication through graphic signs including language characters, pictograms and calligraphies has been expending wider by the development of media technology. In this new media circumstance, this study which search for the origin of graphic arts with a new point of view would be very meaningful to find the fresh materials as graphic arts and to broaden the space of artistic expressions.
