Abstract
The talisman, with its long history, is a kind of incantation as a symbolic charm that mediates between God and human beings. As symbolic proof containing spiritual messages, the talisman is a symbolic art form that consists of various literal graphics and images. It has retained its original forms up to today as it has been handed down in secret. The talisman has played a pivotal role in transmitting traditional Korean aesthetic and philosophical thought rooted in folk cultures through the generations. The talisman, with its unique formative system, shows rich artistic vision by representing the relationship between man and philosophy and psychology in a sublime art form using lines. However, in research on the aesthetic world of talisman its artistic value has been underestimated because of social conventions and prejudices or ignorance about shamanism. Therefore, this study focuses on the talisman’s aesthetic aspects by putting emphasis on the fact it is an art of lines. This discussion about the talisman’s formative language has meaning as it provides the foundation on which we can discover graphic images that have aesthetic value and assign new formative values to these graphic images. That is to say, it provides a wide aesthetic repertoire which can be reinterpreted as new graphic art in modern art. We need to pay attention to the representative way of meaning in graphic images of talisman in the aspect of 'the fulfillment of symbolism' and 'the establishment of the abstract'. Such studies will be discussed in more detail in subsequent studies.
