Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the training effect on aqua exercise. The research design was a systematic review of the literature on training effects on aqua exercise. In methods, KISS and KERIS were searched from 1990-2010. Articles meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were critically appraised for methodological quality. In results, 17 out of 130 identified articles were accepted to analyze the training effect on aqua exercise. Fourteen(82%) out of 17 articles were studied for the patients with knee arthritis and physical/psychological functions in elderly. Overall, aqua exercise increased flexibility and cardiovascular ability. Also, the results showed decreased pain and increased muscular strength/endurance in patients with arthritis but not all patients. The body composition and Vo2max were improved in elderly. Balance, depression, self-efficacy, and quality of life showed positive effects but not all studies. The most results of studies were acquired from the females except patients with back problem. In conclusions, there are few good studies on training effect on aqua exercise and limited information on the back problems and diabetics of aqua exercise. Some common methodological problems were also identified in this literature with the hope of improving future studies.
