Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze vision habits according to the directional agreement between the dominant eye and the preferred hand and to investigate its correlation with subjective fatigue during smart device use. Methods: A survey of 188 adult men and women in their 20s and 30s examined vision habits and subjective fatigue by posture during smart device use. The viewing distance, viewing angle, and usage time were analyzed for the vision habits according to the directional agreement between the dominant eye and the preferred hand and the subjective fatigue was analyzed by dividing into ocular and general scores. Results: During smart device use, the usage time tended to differ in the sitting posture by the directional agreement of the dominant eye and the preferred hand, the usage time and viewing distance tended to be affected in the standing posture, and the difference of viewing angle was statistically significant in the lying down posture. In all postures, the tendency toward a higher ocular fatigue was observed when the directions of the dominant eye and preferred hand disagreed; however, a statistically significant correlation was found only in the interaction between usage time and viewing distance in the lying down posture. On the other hand, the difference in general fatigue by posture was insignificant; however, a significant correlation was noted with the interaction between the directional agreement of the dominant eye and the preferred hand and the usage time in the lying down posture. Conclusions: From these results, it was revealed that vision habits according to the directional agreement of the dominant eye and the preferred hand differed by posture during smart device use, as did the interaction of vision habits and subjective fatigue. Thus, corresponding guidelines for smart device use in consideration of these could help minimize subjective fatigue.
